Surgical Options
When medical weight loss programs have repeatedly failed, surgical weight loss may be the best option for those looking to live healthier, longer lives. According to the American College of Surgeons, bariatric weight loss surgery has been shown to be extremely effective, with lasting weight reduction in the majority of obese patients. Our Center offers the Rou-en Y Gastric ByPass, the Vertical Sleeve, the Lap-Band and Revision Surgery.
Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass
The surgeon creates a small pouch in the stomach from a portion of the upper stomach which limits the amount of food intake at a meal. A new connection is constructed between the small intestine and the new stomach pouch. This new outlet empties directly into the middle portion of the small intestine, thus limiting the absorption of calories. The gastric bypass is typically performed laparoscopically. A laparoscopic procedure involves making several small incisions rather than one large incision, resulting in shorter recovery time, reduced pain, and a better cosmetic result.
Lap-Band®
A band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach restricting the food intake. The band can be adjusted, allowing more or less food intake to meet the individual's weight loss needs. Because food intake is regulated, most patients feel full faster. Food digestion occurs through the normal digestive and absorption process. The procedure is less invasive and more easily reversible.
Vertical Sleeve
This procedure generates weight loss by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten by removing 60% or more of the stomach without bypassing the intestines or causing any malabsorption. It is a restrictive operation that avoids the use of an implanted device.
Revisions
Post-bariatric surgery patients generally seek revision weight loss surgery for three reasons: failure to lose adequate weight, weight regain, or medical complications. The type of revision is dependent upon the goal of the revision, the surgical anatomy, and the individual characteristics of the patient. Our surgeons have many years of experience performing bariatric surgery, which qualifies them to perform even the most complicated revision surgeries.
